GREEN LAKE, MAINE
Sometimes it's the little things. Or what seem like little things. A deck refinish? Sounds simple enough, doesn't it? Except when the substrate is a potpourri of paint, stain, and even that dreaded miracle-in-a-can product big box stores push. In this case, the labor was intensive...but absolutely worth it.
After laborious stripping, sanding and endless vacuuming (it was late in the season so we were fighting everything from bugs to falling leaves) we applied two coats of solid stain. (SuperDeck IR, which boasts technology that reflects solar rays to maintain a cooler surface temperature on your deck. Your bare feet will thank you.) By following the tips offered in the Gatcomb Deck Care Guide, this finish will last for years to come.
But we weren't done just yet. As an add-on, we also agreed to replace a small section of rotten siding. Again, it seemed quick and simple enough...until we discovered the rot was more extensive than the homeowners (and we) anticipated. The deeper we got, the worse it became...until we finally struck solid, uncompromised cedar. After that, it was merely a matter of installing new siding, applying sealant, and touching up with two coats of solid stain.
